Midnight (Fiction)
Atria, $26.95
This book sparked a lot of debate, conversation and controversy. It's been ten years since Sister Souljah released her smash hit, The Coldest Winter Ever, where the character Midnight made his first appearance. Well, many fans were upset that this book wasn't a sequel. They were mad that Midnight didn't fall for a black girl. They were mad at the depiction of black women in this book. But books are supposed to challenge you and push the envelope and make you think. And with this one, Sister Souljah accomplished all of that.

Simon & Schuster, $15.00
If you have sons, brothers, nephews or if you know of any young, black male in need of guidance and reassurance, this is a book you must give him. It also provides some solid solutions and answers to many questions like: What kind of music should I listen to? And: What kinds of books should I be reading?

Karen Hunter Publishing/Foundry Media Group, $25.00
Most of us will have a resolution to lose weight in 2009. But before we do, why not try out a few of Ms. Patti's favorites, like her fried porgie (her mother's recipe), her hot and spicy potato salad, her mean greens and black eyed peas and her smothered pork chops. She even has quite a few recipes for the health conscious, too. Bon appetite! (This is one of the prettiest books I've ever published).

'The Shack' sold more than four million copies-one of the biggest hits of the year. But what many don't know is that the publisher sold about a million copies of the best seller out of his garage in California. After submitting the manuscript to 20 different major publishers, both mainstream and Christian, and getting 20 rejection letters, Brad Cummings, along with his partner Wayne Jacobsen, who has had several works published by mainstream publishers, decided to print the book themselves. Nikki Giovanni was immortalized in Teena Marie's 'Square Biz' in the 1980s (during the rap portion, Marie mentions Giovanni as well as William Shakespeare,) but this author and academic is best known for her poetry, and is an icon in the genre. Recently, she has made a detour into the children's book market (including 'Hip Hop Speaks to Children: A Celebration of Poetry With a Beat') where she is finding best-seller success. In her spare time, Nikki Giovanni teaches and she reads -- a lot.
What Are You Currently Reading?
I'm embarrassed to say that I've been reading a bunch of children's books. I just finished 'The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane' by Kare DiCamillo.
My next project will be either 'The Pied Piper' or 'The Prodigal Son,' so I am doing research on those two, as well. You know that the Pied Piper was black, right? He was a gyspy and that's why the people of Hamelin (Germany) didn't want to pay him. I'm trying to get over to Hamelin and continue my research.

This book will make a wonderful holiday gift and would be a nice coffee table addition.
Simon & Schuster

This book is better than the movie. It's the story of one little girl and her struggle to find herself and love amid a very cruel beginning. It is also the story of a successful family of black women and how their love of one another and bees can overcome all. The black Madonna has a starring role in this book, as well.

Kelli Stich Mills travels an hour each way to work each day. Prior to getting an Amazon Kindle for her birthday, she would be lugging around books on her commute each day.

Now, she is one of millions who are hooked on an electronic device to read their books. And while the exact number of people who have purchased a Kindle or a Sony Reader has not been publicized, thanks to Oprah Winfrey, the Kindle is currently on backorder and will not be available even for Christmas.
"I love my Kindle," said Stich Mills, who works in publicity for a New York firm. "I realized instantly it would be so much more convenient."

When is telling it all, TMI? There are a string of "tell-alls" that have hit the best-seller's lists and made headlines, from Kim Osorio's 'Straight from the Source' to Carmen Bryan's It's No Secret to the most famous of them all, 'Confessions of a Video Vixen' by Karrine Steffans.

A Mercy (Fiction) by Toni Morrison
Knopf, $23.95
I had to read 'Beloved,' Morrison's tour de force (and winner of the Pulitzer Prize) , three times (yes, three times!) to get the mastery and genius of that book. 'A Mercy,' her first book since 'Beloved' to deal with the issue of slavery, is not so steeped in allegory and mystery, but the story is compelling all the same.
