Some people might argue that words are just words, but if words don't matter, then writers don't matter – and if writers don't matter, neither do we.
Writers take us to different places and introduce us to all kinds of people throughout vast periods in time. In one story, we might travel from 1920s Harlem to Nigeria in the midst of terror during the Biafran War, and then on to the mystical Oguta Lake, all without ever having to set foot outside our door.
Words and writers should never be underestimated, and there are hundreds of brilliant authors who deserve our appreciation and respect.
To wrap up Women's History Month, BlackVoices.com put together a gallery of 40 influential black women authors. Some names you may know and others you may not. Their varied backgrounds give way to multi-faceted perspectives.

Obviously, this is what happens when first the lines are blurred, secondly, knowledge is limited and thirdly, all end up being posted on the internet. We do not consider those genres of Black Literature who write for the $ and not to be read ten, fifteen or more years from now. Can you honestly say that after reading some of these books you would pick any of them up again in the future to read again? Take the litmus test before deciding that if someone Black wrote it, it is literature and will endure.

Very excited and pleased to see that the Shadow Speaker by Nnedi Okorafor made the list. I could not put the book down until I finished it (same with her other books like Zarah the Windseeker and Who Fears Death).

Ok I commend you for Zora Neale Hurston, bell Hooks, Maya Angelou, Terry McMillan, and a few others on this list. BUT KARRINE STEFANS?!?!?! ComOnSon...Are u kiddin me? She's the type of author/ woman that sets us back 100 years. Sharon G. Flake would have been a better choice and she is author for African American young adult books. But she still would have been a waaay better choice than the woman who wants to make her derogatory nick name "super head" a clothing line.
