Jessica Holter has never been known to mince words. For over a decade, she has transfixed audiences with her poetry that explores sensuality and sexuality.
In 2007, she hit a milestone when Zane, the critically acclaimed author and publisher of erotica, released 'Verbal Penetration,' which propelled Holter into the spotlight.
Now comes 'The Punany Experience: The War Between Tops and Bottoms, Not Your Average Down Low Story' by Holter, which is sure to raise eyebrows.
It is the story of Stormy Talbert, a bisexual, Korea Smith, an androgynous businesswoman and Hartford, a married man. And it takes you down mental alleyways and passages you never imagined.
Black Voices caught up to Holter. Below are excerpts from the conversation.
BV on Books: How did you come up with the title?
Jessica Holter: The first part of the title is what I call the theatrical episodes fans have when they attend a show by The Punany Poets [which she created in 1995 after the untimely death of gangsta rapper Eazy-E]. "The War Between Tops and Bottoms" is the title of a poem published by Zane in 'Verbal Penetration.' The novel is based on that poem, which details a night of taboo love making between two lesbians and a married man. The last part of the title "Not the Average Down Low Story" intends to let readers know that this book is not about a gay man, but a straight one, who happens to be curious about anal sex -- though not with a man.
BV: What was the genesis of "The Punany Experience?''
JH: I started with a basic plot about Stormy, Korea and Hartford, and suddenly the characters began to write their own stories. They gave themselves childhoods and families and very strong opinions. As in my poetry, I include many elements of the human experience: spiritual confusion, loss, love, career fulfillment and sexual curiosity. But the general theme is about experimentation and pushing one's own limits.
BV: How did you develop the characters?
JH: Let's just say it is a story I am very familiar with. It has been on my mind for a long time, mostly because I wanted to talk to women about the secret nature of the down low [lifestyle] without putting two men in bed together. Hartford is a lovely man who loves and takes care of his family. He is successful and sexy. He is humble and honest. He also is sexually curious, not because of any twisted desire, but because the strangest thing happened at the doctor's office one day. Stormy is the ultimate passive-aggressive. She is adorable, lovable and quite the manipulator. Korea is the epitome of a woman, unbound by any man, any politics, or any illusions. She is the realist you will hate to love. There are some great [characters] in the background too. I absolutely loved meeting them all and I am excited about presenting them to the world.
BV: Do you think these so-called "trysexual'' relationships are becoming a standard today?
JH: I think as women get more frustrated with secrets and lies, we will begin to open the channels of communication with our mates more. Hopefully, we will be open and not judgmental. The truth is that people love to talk. I have learned that from producing interactive sex education theater shows. People will tell you anything if they feel that you will not judge them.
BV: Do you think it's a stereotype that women and men who are open to these relationships have experienced traumatic childhoods? I ask because it's an element of the story.
JH: Yes. But, I believe a lot of women -- who are lesbian by choice -- have chosen so because they feel more comfortable with women. But in the story, Hartford decides to be with a woman who handles him as a man would, not because of sexual trauma, but because of his own personal sexual desires. The prostate is a very sensitive place that is almost always overlooked by heterosexual women. I truly believe the down low [phenomenon] is a result of that. I mean, we keep a minimum of one million black men incarcerated at any given time in America. Most of them know they have that down low spot back there. This awareness will soon be universal. There are already classes being taught on the topic of prostate stimulation.
BV: What's next for you?
JH: I am editing The 'Punany Psalms,' a series of self-published poetry and short stories by day, and working on my next novel for Zane by night. The novel, 'Grave Mothers,' is a deviation from erotica that is allowing another voice to come through me. The book ponders the question of how responsible we are for the sins of our children.

Why should we read a book just because it is published? Why should we continue to buy Rubbish? Why should we continue to support someone's obstructed and degenerative fantasies? I guess this is America, home of equal rights movements. Everything goes.
First of all, homosexuality is a sin. It is not condoned in any religion or any ethical organization throughout the entire universe. Prove me wrong! We are human beings for Christ sake, why should we align ourselves with animals? Our brains are too developed to let that happen. For the fact that you have a little attraction for the same sex does not mean that you should go that mode. If that is the case, then you should go ahead and steal that piece of jewelry that you fancy from your neighborhood Kay's jewelry store. This is just one example. The moral to my standpoint at this juncture is that, we should restrict our pursuits within the guiding blocks of ethics and morality. It is the right thing to do! Don't become a waste element inside the negative aftermath of civilization.

Everything is permissible and anything goes in society today. Don't be a slave and brought under the power of filth. Sexual immortality violates your own body, resist it. This sexual endoctrination exploses our children to a society that normalizes sexual immortality. May the Lord have mercy on this nation.

I'm not so sure if I get the venom hurled at the author regarding HER story. Although I agree homosexuality has made a strong bid for being mainstreamed by the media in recent years. However, no straight persons should feel threatened by it. I'm a straight male who thoroughly enjoys everything about women. There's no measure of propaganda that could change that. I especially love black women. I've always felt that those people who react with such anger and hatred over homosexual issues are likely unstable in their own sexual identity and can't stomach situations and conversations that conjure up their inner/secret conflicts. If homosexuality is mainstreamed, why should it worry you? God will take care of it. It's not my business.

I agree! The folks that's making a big deal about homosexuality needs to get a life. I could care less what they're doing. I'm more concerned about the economy, unemployment, the oil spill in the gulf coast, violent gang bangers, and illegal immigration etc; than two grown adults getting their groove on. Get a life!

Zane and Her demonic followers are bound straight to hell. This is one of the sickest phenomenas I have yet to read. To think, a black woman(already oppressed by society's economic and racist structure would further alienate us by delving into this homosex crap. Now that is an example of a woman who is looking to get paid and to fill the world with as much disease as is in her sick mind. Get some help girl! Find Jesus before it is too late!!

I am simply shaking my heads. Homosexuality is a Big Deal!! It is more than someone getting their groove on. It is a deviance from nature and how God intended us to use our bodies. Black people sure could use some spiritual rain on their heads right now, but then how can they when in most of the churches, the pastors are simply "getting paid" and living in gated communities away from his own. Let's face it... this author/sheister or whatever she calls herself will not sell to white audiences. Therefore, she knows weak minded (accept anything come our way,,black folks--her own people) are thirsty for lewd filth and so she is just trying to pay for her saab/mercedes/condo ---away from the ghetto for sure. This is an economic move for her to pawn her filthy sick ideas off on an already depressed--weak minded community of people. We are on the demise as a people. The black race is rapidly declining; our youth are dating outside their own race and black males will push a black woman in front of a bus to save a white woman who will then kill his black behind to get rid of him when his money runs out. So, I refuse to let one more calamity come my way. Ms/Mr/or whatever you are....Get a real job and stop peddling your filth our way.
