Herndon L. Davis had three careers before landing on his feet. In his new book, 'Repackaged Common Sense: A New Age Path to Career and Business Success,' he writes about turning challenges into triumphs. Davis, a TV host and executive producer of DiversityTV.tv, an online news and entertainment video magazine, also writes how his spiritual growth helped him overcome the harsh realities of life.Davis began his career in corporate budgeting and human resources planning. Later, he expanded his career to include communications, media and public relations. Later still, he became an author, commentator and syndicated writer, focusing on media analysis and the interpretation of issues pertaining to people of color, women, gays and lesbians, according to his Web site.
Davis holds a bachelor's degree in finance and spent nearly 25 years in the corporate world until he realized it was not for him. That's when he found himself jobless and in search of a new career.
"I was laid off from a job when I miraculously realized I didn't want to be on the corporate finance path,'' Herndon said in an interview with BV on Books. "I started writing and speaking full time. The lay off opened doors for me to transition to media, communications and public relations. I've had three different careers, including human resources and finance. Now that I'm on third one, I'm doing what I like. Although I majored in finance, I realized my strength was in something else. I just didn't transition into it voluntarily. It was a signal from the universe. I made lemonade out of lemons to use a cliché. So, whether you've been laid off or fired, take the time figure out what you want to do and do it.''

Herndon's Five Rules of Law:
I. You are not a victim. One of the biggest things that happens when we get laid off or fired is that we look for someone or something to blame. Some of us are so quick to say, 'Oh, they are racists.' Stop! We have to see every experience as a learning experience. Sometimes it's really not about us. It boils down to dollars and sense.
II. It's never too late to succeed. If you haven't achieved success by a certain age then you must be a failure and you'll never succeed. It's not true. It's a fallacy that has to be shattered.
III. You are not the check in the box that people put next to your name. You can transcend whatever it is others see you as.
IV. Do your own research. Always use as much information around you as possible. Use the Internet and network. We have to be intellectually curious to seek out our next opportunity. If we are expecting it to come us, it's not going to come. We have to go get it.
V. Use your spirituality. We have everything inside us to succeed. We have talents that we don't realize until we seek them out on a spiritual level. I try to teach people in workshops that we can accomplish whatever it is we want, but we have to figure out what that is. We can accomplish this through spiritual visualization.

I am sure you don't know what the true meaning of that scripture is. You seem to be one of those bible toters who like to pick and choose scriptures to use on everyone else that apply s to a situation you are jJUDGING them about. I am pretty sure you DONT follow all of the scriptures in the bible. So you have a choice, either follow it all, or don't follow it at all...Boy I tell you..So called Christians.

Herndon, can't wait to purchase your book! I've been "under-employed" since Dec. 2008 through no fault of my own but took it personal, especially because I suffered a back injury when released by my employer. Now in hindsight almost 2 years later, I realize I have been involved with the 5 Rules of Law you describe above at some level and I have to keep pressing forward.
I'm not usually one to call people out but SmittyT, if you don't believe in your own worth and the internal tools given to you to succeed, I feel sorry for you. Charles, I'm not sure if you're African-American or not but we have to start being more supportive of our own. This brother is out there trying to do his thing - - what are you doing? Likewise, Truethat, I am a Christian and assuming that you are also. But I can tell you this, if what you posted was your "witness" to this brother to let him see the Christ in you, you failed the faith miserably. Yes, Jesus may be the answer and your scripture appropriate but you have to put some "feet to your faith" like this brother is doing and stop waiting for God to do it all. God is not an ATM machine that a prayer and scripture tossing will make blessings rain down. We have to do some work also. Faith without works (i.e., feet) is dead. Be Blessed!

Herndon recently spoke at a couple of schools in Jackson, MS while promoting his book. He really stressed the importance of telling your story and not being defined by your circumstances. I think that is just the right message for anyone who is going through challenges.

Herndon's philosophy is essentially, IMHO, the philosophy of hope (over hopelessness)--realizing that hope alone is NOT a strategy. When times are low we can either roll over and wallow, or we can reassess and prepare for the next phase of our lives. I completely agree with him that all of our experiences are LEARNING EXPERIENCES, which we have the CHOICE to learn from or ignore. There are things that happen to us that are beyond our control, but I (and I think Mr. Davis) believe that we can control (influence) much more than we know.

Herndon: Congratulations. Unlike the first three comments which show an amazing lack of intelligence-kinda our own versions of Sarah Palin/Glenn Beck, your message is clear, focused and resonates like a large peeble in a still pond. Keep writing and sharing. Keep believing in the connectivity of spirit and the value of spirit to uplift us all

Thank you Herndon for your perspective on this matter. As a freelance Music video director & FCP editor during this recession, it can be very challenging. Good paying gigs are hard at times hard to come by. One can easily fall into depression if you do not know how to deal with hardship. I know I have, but during this time, it is about testing your faith and doing your part to succeed. "God Help those, who help themselves."
I am currently designing two websites and became an Online Outreach/Marketing Coordinator & Consultant under my production company, Our Stories Productions, LLC (www.ospfilms.com). I am also about to launch a film magazine as well and in the process of producing the 3rd Annual QBC Int'l Film Festival 2010 which will take place at the National Black Theatre in Harlem, NY. To me it's about re-conditioning your mind to think positive. Focus on what you DO have and not what you DON'T have. Trust me, opportunities will come along. In fact, it was always there but because some of us get caught up in feeling sorry for ourselves, the negative energy cloud our mind and therefore could not see potential opportunities for success. Yes, it is easier said then done but possible. Take one day at a time and hopefully, people who are depress will come out of it.
I look forward to reading your book and being inspired. Your book is right on time for me.
Continued success!
