'The Shack' sold more than four million copies-one of the biggest hits of the year. But what many don't know is that the publisher sold about a million copies of the best seller out of his garage in California. After submitting the manuscript to 20 different major publishers, both mainstream and Christian, and getting 20 rejection letters, Brad Cummings, along with his partner Wayne Jacobsen, who has had several works published by mainstream publishers, decided to print the book themselves. "It was a little too much Jesus for the mainstream publishers and too edgy for the [Christian] publishers, but we knew it was fine just the way it was and we didn't want to change it," said Cummings. "Wayne had grown tired of the publishing industry because it was in the same old rut. I was actually hoping no one would buy it because I didn't want to just give this away."
Without any advertising, very limited marketing, but with a whole lot of faith, Cummings and Jacobsen went to a small printer nearby, printed 10,000 copies and were in business, launching Windblown Media. Their marketing? A podcast, TheGodJourney.com, which they hosted weekly and talked about God and things that mattered to them. About three years ago, they started talking about this book they were working on and their audience, about 8,000 strong, showed a great interest in the project. Cummings and Jacobsen had 1,000 pre-orders before they even finished the book and they sold out the 10,000 first print-run in less than three months. "
The College Survival Guide
A Fridge
Regardless of whether you have a wonderful sized meal plan, your fridge may come in handy with leftovers or when you feel like stocking it with bottled drinks.
Computer
The convenience of a computer is essential when sending your kids off to college. Forget the hike to the computer lab across campus students need a computer in the comfort of their room. A printer comes in handy as well. Depending on whether your child plans to carry his laptop around campus, you might opt for a desk top since they're lighter on the pockets.
Snacks
You will surely survive with off of a meal plan but it doesn't hurt to stock up on snacks when you don't feel like leaving your dorm room. Bottled water, pop corn, cereal and Ramen noodles are all low budget snacks to stock up on. Just be weary of the freshman 15.
Things from home
Some college students suffer from homesickness the first year. It's best to surround yourself with things like photos of the family, pillows or even stuffed animals. Anything that reminds your child of home.
MP3 Player
With all the stress that comes from school and exams, sometimes it's nice to block out the chaos in your life and even your roommate with music. It's nearly impossible to find students walking to class who aren't jamming to tunes.
Budget
Students who enter college often come in at the ripening age of 18. A great time for credit cards. Parents beware, your child may end up ruining their credit at a young age
Alarm Clock
When you're in college you don't have the luxury of getting awaken by your parents. It's now your responsibility to get to class on time so alarm clocks are a must. But keep your roommate in mind. You shouldn't wake him up ever morning with a blow horn alarm.
Cleaning supplies
Now you don't necessarily need to bring in the rubber gloves, mop and gas mask but it doesn't hurt to bring along Clorox all purpose wipes for spills or dust. Vacuums and brooms come in handy too depending if you have a carpeted dorm.
Bedding
What most parents aren't aware of is that most college beds are twin sized but extra long and require special sheets. When shopping keep your eye open for sheets that clearly state 'extra long' or else your child may come up short.
Shower shoes
You really don't know what some people do in the shower these days. College showers are known to be creeping with germs so spare yourself the fungus and purchase flip flops for the shower. You'll thank us later!
"It was like that commercial where someone tells two friends and they tell two friends and so on," said Cummings. "It was all word of mouth. Our listeners were the best PR reps we could find. And we didn't have to spend a dime to get the message out there. For a year and a half we were unintentionally teasing people about this book. When it finally was out, people really wanted it. But more than that, they wanted everyone they knew to read it, too."
Cummings and Jacobsen started selling 'The Shack' by the caseload and had to expand their operations and move it from the study in Cummings' home to his garage, which was filled to the hilt with cases of books.
"This is the quintessential Cinderella story," said Cummings. "It frightens some of the big publishers because they say, 'Oh, my Gosh, they don't need us!' We're not the new gurus on the block. We don't have an explanation for this other than this message resonates deep inside of people."
The story is about one man who experienced a tragedy and questions the existence of God. He receives a letter in the mail from "Papa," which is the name his wife uses for God. Papa wants to meet him at a shack. He decides to go and what he finds is a whole new understanding of God.
"One of the coolest responses we got was from a 13-year-old girl who told us that the way she read her Bible she never measured up," Cummings said. "She never really felt that God loved her. But after reading 'The Shack' she fell in love with Papa and now has a brand new understanding of the Bible. 'The Shack' has led her into her own conversational relationship with God."
'The Shack's message is definitely inspiring, but the story of its success should also be encouraging to anyone who has a great story to tell and cannot get a mainstream publisher to publish it. Have faith. And do it yourself!

God is So Amaziing! This book was handed to me for Christmas form a friend & by the way she told me this book affected her .. i began reading the following day .. in the beginning i was confused as to where it was going because of the Evilness that occurs in teh beginning (Well "evil" in the terms that i have understood it) *u will understand once u read it urself* :)
Then papa (God) sends him a letter & the story begins! whhheeew .. This book is so good for many reasons .. but also for men who take on SO Much pressure when they fail in life(they believe its failure) & THEY Carry it with them in life That it consumes u so much that You lose yourself & Ur relationship with God ..
dont know how else to express how everyone's Soul needs the peace that this book will bring you & ur spirit ..IT WILL RESTORE UR RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST

I gave this book out for christmas to 13 of my best friends. My prayer is that God bless them like he blessed me. I stop saying what will come out of the book because everyone will get their own revelation. This is a great book.

I heard about " The Shack" from a coworker. I am no longer with this company and was wondering why God put me in this job. I know God puts me in places he wants me to be of service to Him in. I do know that the place was very angry, chaotic and there was a lot of back biteing. It was put on my heart to bring in " The Bible Experience" and other CD's such as Joyce Meyer and TD Jakes and play them. The air of chaos did begin to get better. I also know there are other reasons I was there (perhaps to help someone or to teach someone a lesson)and one of those reasons was to get introduced to the book "The Shack." I was in a Christian book store one day and it was just sitting in plain sight and I just so happen to have extra money so I just picked it up.The person at the cash register said because the book was disallowed and then allowed again they put in a disclaimer. The disclaimer was even a good review of the book. I am not sure why a disclaimer was even in it. Some narrow minded folks that call themselves Christians could be the only reason I could think of. I gave the book to my 15 year old to read. My son is a devought child of God. He LOVES the Lord. He read the book within the week. I was hoping he could just tell me about the book, but he said I would have to read it. I see by this board I would have to read it to get from it what I am supposed to get as everyone gets what they are supposed to get. My son said he loved the book and that it just brought him even closer to God. My son in impressed with how someone could write such a book the insight he has that has come across in the book he thinks is amazing grace. After reading this board today, I think I will begin to read The Shack today.

My name is Trai and I am 15 years old. My mother wrote the last blog. When my mom first brought the book The Shack by William P. Young, she asked me to read it. At first I wasn't really interested because I had other school books to read, but one day I decided to check it out. I opened up to a random page and chapter and read one sentance and was immediately hooked. As I began to really get into the book and saw how the main character MAC was growing in his relationship with God, I too grew a desire to seek God more. The book was really interesting to me, because of how it talked about how we as human being make our selfs independent of God and in our pride, and not wanting to take personal responsiblity we end out forgetting and/or ignoring how much God loves us and wants to be apart of our everyday lives. I was really inspired by how the author wrote the story and asked as well as answered many of lifes questions by using the WORD and real life issues and people from the 21st Century to make it more clear to his point. This book has really drawn me closer to God an now I have an even stronger and deeper Relationship with HIM.

No one can EVER go wrong when they have GOD in their lives - when someone reaches out to help others with GOD as yhe front focus - only success and glory happens! This is a wonderful story as I am just about so self publish my first book - a saelf help guide for sinlg mother's raising their son's. Motherhood by choice, not by chance. God gave this blessing and we, his people have to bring back the importance of having and raising children - we are just loosing too many of them. D. Bolds

I am with Publish America and just submitted my second manuscript for review. They wrote me back asking me to make all these changes and told me to change the name of my book becuase it was too close to someone else's who was also an author with them. I was already skeptical about publishing with them again, especially after the sick royality check that I received last year, but lately I've been feeling strongly about self publishing. I talked to my husband about self publsihing and we found this site called Lulu, which seemed to be a pretty good start. I prayed about it, closed the Lulu site after reading about how I can self publish and as soon as I closed the website, I say this article on AOL. God works in myserious way and I feel even stronger now that self publishing is the way to go, after reading this.
