Hill Harper, actor ('CSI-NY,' 'Lackawanna Blues'), best-selling author ('Letters To A Young Sister' and 'Letters to A Young Brother'), and activist gives BV Bookshelf a look into what he's reading (and listening to) these days.
What Are You Currently Reading?
"I'm actually driving through Missouri campaigning for
Barack Obama and I'm listening to 'Dreams From My Father' on tape. He wrote that book after he and I graduated from Harvard. I'm doing so much work for him and his campaign, reading his book is a nice reminder of who I'm working for and why.
"I'm also reading 'By The River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept.' It's a novel by Paulo Coelho. I was in the bookstore getting another Coelho book, 'The Alchemist,' for a friend and I saw that. I had read it a while back while in law school. A young lady I was dating gave it to me. So I wanted to read it again to take me back to that time in my life. I believe that books are sensory experiences. I'm not just enjoying the story, I'm also being reminded of a time and place in my life.
'By The River' is a book about unconditional love. Part of my journey is attempting to expand my heart. I know that what you put into your mind has an affect on your heart. When people see certain images and song lyrics and they're like, "it don't matter," it's not true. I'm not about censorship. I watch and do everything. You just have to make sure you have a balance. There are certain songs and videos I like because I do and I don't have to justify it. But I make sure I balance those images and words with things that edify my mind and spirit."
Book That Most Inspired or Had An Impact on You?
'Way of The Peaceful Warrior' by Dan Millman
I was gifted that book by a buddy. It reinforced to me that anything is possible. It spoke about how there are no limits to what anyone can do. No matter what your
circumstances, the only limitation you have is your imagination. Tavis Smiley one said to me, 'Dream Big and once you've dream that, double it. And you still haven't dreamed big enough.' That book reminds me to push beyond even my limits.

I AM SO PROUD OF HILL HARPER, INCLUDING BARACK OBAMA PRESIDENT-ELECT, F FRSOR A GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT IN HIS CAREER. NOT TOO MANY HANDSOME AND SEXY BLACK MEN TAKE THE TIME TO WRITE A BOOK, SO THIS IS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR!. HILL HARPER IS AN ESTABLISHED ACTOR/COLLEGIAN AND I HAVE FOLLOWED HIS CAREER SINCE HE PLAYED A "COLLEGE BOY" IN THE MOVIE: "GET ON THE BUS" IN 1995. THANK YOU HILL FOR YOUR POSTIVE IMAGE OF WHO A "BLACK MAN" CAN BE IN "AMERICA". LOVE AND PEACE.

now thats what i'm taking about, there are more to our black brothers than what is being portrayed
there are very smart and respectful brothers out there
stop shining light on the thugs and do nothings the drug dealers etc. because that is not who we are.
Hill and Borack are an example of the future as so many of our Black brothers are and not let us forget the sister's that can be positive roll models as well.
the youth today truly need positive people in their lives and Hill and Barack are the future, and thats just to name a few because there are so many positive brothers and sisters out here that go unreconized.

Thank God for these young intelligent inspiring men.
May God keep them humble and focus on the positive things in life. America needs people like this to be roll models for the next generation.
God bless and keep them is my prayer.

I heard Mril Hillard speak at the NAACP Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio. I was impressed. I purchased his book ( Letters to a Brother) and gave it to my granchildren to read. I have also on a daily basis emailed Mr. Hillard with Daily Motivators. It is jusdt a good thing when we have Brothers doing the "good work". I have grown to admire who he is in our lives. Continue the work for Obama. It is good to have a good friend.

I am a big fan of Mr. Harper's and a supporter of Mr. Obama's. I can't wait for November 4. I plan on picking up his books, as I have already read Mr. Obama's. What I find disheartening is that there are only a handful a comments on this topic but there are hundreds, sometimes thousands on the most ignorant of topics. I applaud all that took the time out to express your thoughts on something about a positive man.
